Childcare vouchers - Government announcement on the childcare voucher benefit

At the Labour Party Conference this week, Gordon Brown announced plans to phase out the childcare voucher benefit during the period April 2011 to April 2015.  They are proposing to provide ten hours a week of free childcare for children aged 2 - 16 years old as an alternative.

We believe that the Government do not fully appreciate the importance of the childcare voucher benefit to working families across the UK.  Childcare vouchers allow families to choose the type of childcre that suits both their children and their working hours.  The governments' proposed alternative will not allow this level of choice.

We are campaigning to save this benefit.  If you would like to sign the official Downing Street petition, please go to http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/keepvouchers

If you are currently receiving the benefit, there will be no immediate changes.  Any parent who takes the benefit in March 2011 will be able to continue to take vouchers, free of tax and national insurance until April 2015.
